Moving Abroad: Frequently Asked Questions
What does Baby Abroad do?
Baby Abroad helps women of color plan a move abroad. We offer workbooks, a one-hour consultation with a step-by-step written relocation plan, extra plans for more destinations, and hands-on assistance with regular check-ins, job help and visa support.
Who is Baby Abroad for?
Baby Abroad is built for women of color who are thinking about, or ready for, a move abroad. You might have never left the United States, be unsure where to go next, or be a younger-generation expat planning a first move. Our approach is supportive, practical and judgment-free.
Which countries do you help with?
Baby Abroad works with clients worldwide, and we are not tied to one location. Your written plan is personalized to the destination you choose, and you can add an extra written plan for each additional country you are considering.
How much do your services cost?
Our workbooks start at $5 USD: Gettin' Gone is $5, Mentally Expatting Better is $7, and the Bundled Books are $10. The Consultation + Written Plan is $75 USD, each extra written plan is $25 per destination, and Hands-On Assistance starts at $200 per month. Prices are indicative until we tailor a plan for you.
What is included in the consultation and written plan?
You get a one-hour meeting that covers visa planning and your move goals. We then send a step-by-step written plan by email and PDF within 24 business hours of your consultation.
Are you an immigration lawyer, and can you guarantee a visa?
No. Baby Abroad provides planning guidance and support, not legal, tax or immigration advice, and we cannot guarantee any visa or outcome. Always confirm requirements with the official government or embassy website, and consider an immigration attorney for complex situations.
How long does it take to move abroad?
Many people plan for six to eighteen months from the first idea to the day they land, though it depends on your visa pathway, savings and how quickly you can gather documents. Our moving abroad checklist lays out a 12-month timeline you can adjust.
How much money do I need to move abroad?
It depends on your destination, visa and lifestyle. Plan for one-time moving costs, your monthly cost of living, and a safety buffer of several months of expenses. Our guide on how much money you need to move abroad shows how to build your own number.
Do I need to speak the local language?
Not always, especially in expat-friendly cities, but learning even the basics makes daily life, friendships and paperwork much easier. Taking a language class after you arrive is also a great way to meet people.
Can I move abroad and keep working remotely?
Often, yes. A growing number of countries have remote work or digital nomad visas, and others allow remote work under different residence permits. Rules differ widely, so check the requirements for your destination, including income and insurance rules.
How do I book a consultation if I am in a different time zone?
All consultations and check-ins are virtual and scheduled through email. When you fill out our contact form, share your preferred time and your time zone, and we will find a time that works.
Do you offer refunds?
No. All Baby Abroad products and services are non-refundable, including workbooks, consultations and written relocation plans. Because our guides and plans are delivered digitally and cannot be returned, every sale is final. If you are unsure which offering fits, reach out first and we will help you find the right starting point.
How do I pay?
We accept card payments through Stripe and payments through Zelle. When you request a service, we will confirm the details and payment method with you by email before your consultation or plan begins.
Why should I choose Baby Abroad?
I left the United States at 18, and much of the advice I received, though well meant, did not fit my background, so I struggled and learned the hard way. Baby Abroad exists so you do not have to. Our guidance is built for women of color and shaped by real experience living abroad, including the day-to-day questions about safety, belonging, hair care and community that generic advice skips.
What is a good starter country for moving abroad?
Costa Rica was my own first move, and it is a great place to start. Learning Spanish was manageable and made daily life much richer, and getting involved in the community was not difficult. The best starter country is still the one that fits your budget, visa options and comfort level, which is exactly what a consultation helps you work out. Read our Costa Rica starter guide for a closer look.
Do you feel safe living abroad?
It is nuanced. I feel safer abroad: I can walk around at night without being harassed, and I am less worried about hate crimes. I am also a single woman, so vigilance is still key everywhere, and safety varies by country, city and neighborhood. Researching your specific destination, and talking to people who live there, matters more than any blanket rule.
Which countries have you been to?
I have traveled to Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Colombia, Mexico, Albania, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany and Greece, and I lived in Costa Rica. That range of firsthand experience across Central America, South America and Europe shapes the advice you get from Baby Abroad.
Do you plan to add more services?
Yes. We plan to onboard a tax professional to help with taxes while living abroad, and to partner with life insurance agents so that your family is taken care of if anything ever happens to you. We will announce new services here and on our social channels as they launch.
Do you only work with women?
Baby Abroad is geared toward women of color, and that is who our content is written for. We do not turn away anyone, though, and clients of any gender are welcome to book.
